About Me

Biography & Personal Statement

Raniya Washington is a sophomore from Waldorf, MD studying Architecture at the University of Maryland. Her interests include knitting, clay making, architecture, interior design, and film. Her prospective research aims to encompass artistic and technical skills to bring new meaning and purpose to buildings and public spaces. Through pursuing a career in Architecture, she hopes to acquire the knowledge on geographical, cultural, and aesthetic factors that will allow people to find comfort and efficiency within her structures and spaces. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in Architecture, she plans to attend graduate school to attain her master’s degree in Architecture and become a licensed architect to bring her architectural creations to life ranging from homes to skyscrapers.

As a College Park Arts Scholar, Raniya intends to explore a variety of her artistic interests through her culminating Capstone project to be completed in her sophomore year. She is excited to have the opportunity to learn about art careers from guest artists. She also looks forward to attending field trips to explore the arts in different forms. As part of her university experience, she plans to become involved with Christian churches on campus, the Student Success Leadership Council, and other clubs of her creative interests to find communities of students with similar interests to her. Her academic goals include studying abroad to explore different aspects of international architecture and participating in interdisciplinary competitions in the school of Architecture, Art & Preservation to challenge her skills and understanding of architectural practices.
